Editorial Policy

How we research, write, and keep things honest.

BackToIndia is read by people making big, expensive, occasionally irreversible decisions — where to school their kids, when to break a lease, whether to sell a house. We take that responsibility seriously. This page explains how the sausage is made.

Who writes here

Every guide is written or reviewed by someone who has actually done the thing — a returnee, a domain expert (CA, immigration lawyer, relocation consultant), or a long-standing community member. Author bios link to real profiles. No pseudonyms, no AI ghostwriters posing as humans.

How we research

  • Primary sources first. Government notifications (RBI, FEMA, Income Tax, CBIC), official forms, and gazette entries — not third-hand blog posts.
  • Cross-check with practitioners. Where rules are ambiguous, we run the interpretation past a qualified CA or lawyer before publishing.
  • Community field-testing. Draft guides are often shared with our 31,000-member community for lived-experience feedback before they go public.

How we use AI

We use AI tools for drafting, summarising, and formatting — the same way a writer uses spellcheck or a search engine. Every published article is written, edited, or substantively reviewed by a named human before it ships. We do not publish AI-generated content without human sign-off.

How we handle money

  • Recommendations are earned, not bought. A partner cannot pay to appear in a "top 5" list or a "recommended" callout.
  • Affiliate links are disclosed. Where we earn a referral fee (bank accounts, movers, health insurance), we say so on the page. It never changes the editorial view.
  • Sponsored content is labelled. If a piece is sponsored, the label appears above the headline — not buried in the footer.

Corrections and updates

Rules change. Rates change. People flag mistakes. When something in a guide is wrong or out of date:

  • • We fix the article and update the "last reviewed" date at the top.
  • • Material corrections get a visible note explaining what changed and when.
  • • Spot something off? Email us via the contact page — we usually respond within a couple of working days.

What we are not

BackToIndia is informational and community-driven. Nothing on the site is legal, tax, immigration, investment, or medical advice for your specific situation. Please confirm important decisions with a qualified professional. (Our Terms of Use cover this in more detail.)

Independence

BackToIndia is independently owned and operated. No government body, political party, service provider, or investor has editorial control. What you read here reflects the judgement of the author and editor named on the page — nothing else.
