One of the first things that surprised me after moving back to India in 2017 was how much the credit card game had changed.
When I left India, credit cards were basic. Pay, earn some points, done.
Now? There are cards with 33% reward rates on travel bookings. Cards with unlimited international lounge access.
Cards that give you hotel elite status just for holding them.
The options are overwhelming.
And if you’re an NRI planning to return – or recently returned – it gets even more confusing. Because not every card is available to NRIs.
I’ve been tracking this closely since 2017. I’ve personally used over a dozen Indian credit cards. And our WhatsApp community of 20,000+ NRIs shares card experiences almost daily.
This guide covers the best cards across every category – with the NRI angle clearly marked for each one.
How to Use This Guide
I’ve organized cards by spending category and budget level.
For each card, I’ve noted:
- Key benefits and reward rates
- Annual fee and waiver conditions
- NRI availability (whether NRIs can apply)
- Who it’s best for
If you’re an NRI, look for the NRI Status tag on each card. It’ll tell you whether the card is available to you and how to get it.
If you’re a returning NRI building credit from scratch, start with the “Best Cards for Beginners” section at the end. That’s your entry point.
Best Premium / Super-Premium Credit Cards
These are the heavy hitters. High annual fees, but the rewards and perks more than compensate if you’re a big spender.
1. HDFC Infinia Credit Card (Metal Edition)
| Feature | Details |
|---|---|
| Annual fee | ₹12,500 + taxes (waived at ₹10 lakh annual spend) |
| Reward rate | 3.3% base (5 points per ₹150). Up to 33% via SmartBuy portal |
| Forex markup | 2% |
| Lounge access | Unlimited domestic + international (Priority Pass for cardholder + guests) |
| Other perks | Complimentary Amazon Prime, Swiggy One, Club Marriott, golf privileges, 24/7 concierge |
| Best for | High spenders, frequent international travelers |
| NRI Status | Not directly available to NRIs. Invite-only card requiring ₹70 lakh+ income or ₹8 lakh+ existing HDFC credit limit. Returning NRIs can work toward this after building credit history for 12-18 months. |
This is the card most people in our community aspire to.
The reward rate through HDFC SmartBuy for flights and hotels is genuinely excellent.
A community member who returned from the Bay Area got this card 14 months after landing – started with a secured card, built his score to 780, and got the invite.
Patience pays off.
2. ICICI Emeralde Private Metal Credit Card
| Feature | Details |
|---|---|
| Annual fee | ₹12,500 + taxes (welcome bonus of 12,500 points) |
| Reward rate | 3% base (6 points per ₹200). Up to 36% on hotels via iShop |
| Forex markup | ~3.5% |
| Lounge access | Unlimited domestic + international (DragonPass) |
| Other perks | Taj Epicure membership, EazyDiner Prime, golf privileges, spa access, 24/7 concierge |
| Best for | HNIs, luxury hotel lovers, Marriott fans |
| NRI Status | Invite-only. Requires ICICI private banking relationship (₹2 crore+ TRV) or ₹40 lakh+ income. NRIs with qualifying ICICI NRE/NRO relationship may be eligible. |
ICICI’s flagship.
The 3% base reward rate is now competitive with HDFC Infinia.
The hotel redemption value through iShop is exceptional.
3. Axis Bank Magnus / Magnus Burgundy Credit Card
| Feature | Details |
|---|---|
| Annual fee | ₹12,500 + taxes |
| Reward rate | 12 EDGE Miles per ₹200 (travel) / 6 EDGE Miles per ₹200 (regular) |
| Forex markup | 2% |
| Lounge access | Unlimited domestic + international |
| Other perks | Complimentary Club Marriott, ITC, Accor Plus memberships, golf privileges |
| Best for | Ultra-high spenders (₹3 lakh+ monthly), travel maximizers |
| NRI Status | Limited NRI availability. Axis Bank offers the Neo card for NRIs, but Magnus requires resident status and high spending history with Axis. |
If you spend over ₹3 lakhs per month, this is arguably the single best card in India.
The EDGE Miles conversion to airline miles is very strong.
4. SBI Card Aurum
| Feature | Details |
|---|---|
| Annual fee | ₹9,999 + taxes |
| Reward rate | 3% on travel, 1.5% on other spends |
| Forex markup | 1.99% (one of the lowest) |

| NRI Status | Not directly marketed to NRIs. SBI does offer NRI credit cards like SBI Elite. Returning NRIs with SBI salary account can apply for Aurum after building credit. |
The 1.99% forex markup is among the best in India.
If you travel internationally even a few times a year, the savings on forex alone can justify the annual fee.
5. American Express Platinum Card
| Feature | Details |
|---|---|
| Annual fee | ₹60,000 + taxes (first-year welcome benefits worth ~₹60,000) |
| Reward rate | Variable. Strong on travel redemptions |

| Other perks | Taj and Oberoi hotel benefits, global concierge, travel insurance, metal card |
| Best for | Luxury travelers, status seekers, Amex ecosystem fans |
| NRI Status | Indian Amex cards require Indian residence and income. NRIs cannot apply directly. If you hold an Amex card in the US/UAE, there’s no direct transfer to an Indian Amex. You’ll need to apply fresh after returning. |
The annual fee is steep. But the first-year welcome benefits usually cover it.
After that, it makes sense only if you genuinely use the hotel and lounge perks.
Best Mid-Range Credit Cards (₹1,000-₹5,000 Annual Fee)
The sweet spot for most returning NRIs and regular spenders.
Good benefits without the premium price tag.
6. HDFC Regalia Gold Credit Card

The 2% forex markup saved us money on a few international transactions, and the dining benefits are practical for everyday use.
HDFC has recently reduced lounge access in some Tier 2 cities.
Check current terms before relying on this for travel.

The 1.99% forex markup is the same as SBI Aurum at almost half the annual fee.
If lounge access and low forex fees matter more than high reward rates, this is excellent value.
8. HDFC Diners Club Black Credit Card
| Feature | Details |
|---|---|
| Annual fee | ₹10,000 + taxes (waived at ₹5 lakh annual spend) |
| Reward rate | Up to 10x on hotels, 5x on flights via SmartBuy. 3.3% base |

| Other perks | Golf privileges, complimentary memberships, milestone benefits |

Carry a backup card.

EDGE Miles convert well to Vistara, Singapore Airlines, and other programs.

NRI Credit Card Rules: What You Need to Know
A few important things that apply to all credit cards for NRIs.
How NRI credit cards work:
Most NRI credit cards are issued against a fixed deposit in your NRE or NRO account. The FD serves as collateral.
Your credit limit is typically 80-90% of the FD amount.
Bills are auto-debited from your NRE/NRO account.
You don’t need to manually pay each month (though I always recommend checking).
What happens when you return to India:
When your status changes from NRI to Resident, your NRI credit card gets cancelled. The bank issues a new resident credit card.
Your CIBIL history carries over.
Read our detailed guide on converting NRE/NRO accounts when you return.
Building credit as a returning NRI:
Your US FICO score doesn’t transfer to Indian CIBIL. You start fresh.
The fastest path is: Secured card → 6-12 months responsible usage → Regular card → 12-18 months → Premium card.
Our complete guide on improving your CIBIL score has the full roadmap.
How to Choose the Right Credit Card
Instead of chasing the “best” card, match the card to your spending.
Step 1: Track your monthly spending for 1-2 months
Where does your money actually go? Online shopping? Groceries? Dining out? Travel? Fuel?
Step 2: Pick the category where you spend the most
A card that gives 5% on Amazon is better than a card with 3% on everything – if Amazon is where you spend the most.
Step 3: Consider the annual fee math
A ₹5,000 annual fee card needs to give you more than ₹5,000 in rewards to be worth it. Calculate before committing.
Example: If you spend ₹50,000/month on a card with 2% rewards, you earn ₹12,000/year in rewards. A ₹5,000 annual fee is easily justified. But if you spend only ₹10,000/month, the ₹2,400 rewards don’t cover a ₹5,000 fee.
Step 4: Don’t chase premium for status
In our community, I’ve seen NRIs rush to get Infinia or Amex Platinum for the “prestige.” If your spending doesn’t justify the fee, a mid-range card gives better value per rupee.
Step 5: Always pay in full
Indian credit card interest rates range from 24% to 42% annually. This is not like US rates. One month of revolving balance can wipe out a year of rewards.
Set up autopay for full balance. This is non-negotiable.

Things That Are Changing in 2026
The Indian credit card market is evolving rapidly. A few trends to watch:
RuPay credit cards on UPI: You can now link RuPay credit cards to UPI apps. This means credit card rewards on everyday UPI payments – from your chai vendor to your maid’s salary.
Some cards like SBI PhonePe Select offer strong UPI cashback.
Devaluations are common: Banks regularly reduce reward rates and lounge access.
The HDFC Regalia Gold lost some lounge access in 2025. ICICI discontinued BookMyShow benefits on some cards in early 2026. Always check current terms before applying.
Secured cards are getting better: Cards like IDFC FIRST WOW! now offer features that rival regular cards.
This is great news for returning NRIs who need to build credit.
Forex markup competition: More cards are dropping to 2% or lower. SBI’s 1.99% was premium territory – now several cards match it.
This benefits NRIs who travel internationally or have cross-border financial needs.
Quick FAQ
Q: What’s the single best credit card in India?
There’s no one answer. For high spenders: HDFC Infinia. For everyday use with no fee: ICICI Amazon Pay. For building credit: IDFC FIRST WOW. It depends on your situation.
Q: Can NRIs get Indian credit cards?
Yes. ICICI, HDFC, SBI, Kotak, and Axis all offer NRI credit cards. Most are issued against an FD in your NRE/NRO account. Check the NRI Status tag on each card above.
Q: What CIBIL score do I need for a premium card?
750+ for most premium cards. 700+ for mid-range cards. Secured cards don’t require any score.
Q: How long does it take to build a CIBIL score from scratch?
3-4 months for your first score to appear. 6-12 months to reach 700+. 12-18 months to reach 750+.
Q: Are credit card reward points taxable?
Generally, reward points under ₹50,000 annually are not taxed. But consult a CA if you earn significant reward value, especially if you’re navigating the NRI tax filing process.
Q: Which bank has the best credit card app?
HDFC and ICICI both have strong mobile apps for managing cards. Axis is catching up. SBI’s app is functional but less polished.
Q: Should I get multiple credit cards?
Eventually, yes. 2-3 cards covering different spending categories give the best overall rewards. But start with one card, use it responsibly for 6+ months, then add a second.
Q: Do I need an Indian income to get a credit card?
Not for secured cards (FD-backed). For regular cards, banks prefer seeing salary credits or a stable income. NRI cards use your NRE/NRO balance instead of Indian salary.
Q: What happens if I miss a payment?
Late payment fee (₹500-₹1,300), interest charges (24-42% annually), and a negative mark on your CIBIL report that stays for years. Set up autopay and avoid this entirely.
