This one’s different from the others in this series.
The first three reviews – HDFC Ergo, Niva Bupa, and ICICI Lombard – were largely written for NRIs still abroad, planning their move back.
But a huge chunk of our WhatsApp community members have already returned. They’re in India. Maybe they’ve been here for a few months. Maybe a year. And they still don’t have health insurance.
I get it. When you first land, there’s so much to do. Finding a house. Getting the kids into school. Setting up bank accounts. Getting an Aadhaar card. Buying a car.
Health insurance somehow keeps sliding to “next month.”
If that’s you, this review is for you.
Care Health Insurance is one of the most popular choices among NRIs who’ve already returned. And there are specific reasons why.

Care Health is a standalone health insurer. Like Niva Bupa, they do only health insurance. No motor, no travel, no home insurance. Health is their entire business.
They’ve settled over 25 lakh claims to date. They’re the second-largest standalone health insurer in India after Star Health. And their recent CSR of 96.74% puts them in the top tier alongside HDFC Ergo.
The brand name changed from Religare to Care in 2020. If you’ve heard people mention Religare Health Insurance, it’s the same company.
Why Care Health Works Well for NRIs Who’ve Already Returned
Here’s why Care Health keeps showing up in our community discussions for returnees already on the ground in India.
Affordable premiums.
This is probably the biggest reason. Care Supreme’s pricing is consistently more affordable than HDFC Ergo Optima Secure and Niva Bupa ReAssure 3.0 for comparable coverage.
When you’ve just moved back and money is going in seventeen directions, this matters.
Massive hospital network.
Over 22,100 cashless healthcare providers across India. That’s larger than HDFC Ergo (13,000+), Niva Bupa (10,400+), and ICICI Lombard (9,500+).
Whether you’ve settled in Bangalore, Hyderabad, Chennai, or a smaller city, you’ll find network hospitals nearby.
No room rent capping.
Under Care Supreme, there’s no cap on room rent.
Choose any room category without worrying about proportional deductions on your claim. This alone sets it apart from many plans in the market.
Unlimited automatic recharge.
If your sum insured gets fully used in a claim, it automatically recharges to the full amount for subsequent claims. For both related and unrelated illnesses. Unlimited times.
15% NRI discount.
Care Health specifically offers a 15% premium discount for NRIs. This is the most generous NRI-specific discount I’ve seen across all four insurers I’ve reviewed so far.
To qualify, you need to be covered under the policy yourself (not just your parents).
Strong and improving CSR.
The claim settlement ratio jumped to 96.74% in FY 2024-25, up from around 90% the previous year. The three-year average sits at ~93%.
That’s a clear upward trend.
No upper age limit.
There’s no maximum entry age for adults under Care Supreme. If you’re buying for parents or in-laws, this matters. Many plans cap entry at 65 or 70.
Care Supreme: The Plan You Should Focus On
Care Health has several plans, but for returning NRIs, Care Supreme is the one to look at. It’s their flagship product and the one most community members end up choosing.
Sum Insured: Rs 5 lakh to Rs 1 crore
What’s Covered Under the Base Plan
Everything you’d expect from a comprehensive health plan, plus some extras:
- Inpatient hospitalization (no room rent capping)
- Pre-hospitalization expenses (60 days before)
- Post-hospitalization expenses (180 days after)
- All daycare procedures (no fixed list – any procedure under 24 hours qualifies)
- Domiciliary treatment (treatment at home when hospitalization isn’t possible)
- Organ donor expenses up to sum insured
- AYUSH treatments (Ayurveda, Yoga, Unani, Siddha, Homeopathy)
- Modern treatments (robotic surgery, stem cell therapy, balloon sinuplasty etc.)
- Road ambulance charges
- Unlimited e-consultations from day one
- Annual health check-ups
The 180-day post-hospitalization coverage is generous. Many plans offer only 60 or 90 days.
The Key Add-Ons That Matter for Returnees
Care Supreme’s real power is in its add-ons. Here are the ones most relevant for NRIs who’ve already returned.
Instant Cover (PED Reduction)
This is the big one if you’ve already moved back and have pre-existing conditions.
The standard PED waiting period is 36 months. With the Instant Cover add-on, you can reduce this significantly. The exact reduction depends on the variant you choose, but it can bring PED coverage much closer to day one.
Compare this across the series:
| Insurer | Fastest PED Coverage |
|---|---|
| Niva Bupa (Day 1 PED) | Day 1 (145 conditions, extra premium) |
| Insurer | Fastest PED Coverage |
|---|---|
| ICICI Lombard (JumpStart) | Day 31 (extra premium) |
| Insurer | Fastest PED Coverage |
|---|---|
| HDFC Ergo (ABCD Rider) | Day 31 (only 4 conditions) |
| Insurer | Fastest PED Coverage |
|---|---|
| Care Health (Instant Cover) | Reduced waiting (extra premium) |
If you’ve already been in India for 6-12 months and haven’t bought insurance yet, every month you wait is a month of waiting period you’re missing out on. Buy now.
Claim Shield
Covers 60+ non-payable consumable items (PPE kits, gloves, masks, syringes etc.) that are commonly billed during hospitalization but excluded by most plans. Available in Regular and Plus variants.
This is similar to HDFC Ergo’s Protect Benefit, but Care Health offers it as an add-on you can choose.
Cumulative Bonus Super
The base plan gives you a cumulative bonus of up to 100% of sum insured for claim-free years. But with the Cumulative Bonus Super rider, you can extend this to 600% or even unlimited accumulation.
This means a Rs 10 lakh policy could grow to Rs 70 lakh or more over time. Powerful for long-term holding.
Care OPD Rider
Covers outpatient expenses – doctor consultations, diagnostic tests, pharmacy bills. Up to 4 consultations per year with psychiatrists/neurologists are also covered.
Useful after you’ve moved back and are doing regular health check-ups and consultations as you settle in.
Air Ambulance Cover
Available as an add-on. Covers air ambulance charges in medical emergencies.
Other Care Health Plans Worth Knowing
Care Supreme Senior
Specifically designed for senior citizens above 60. If you’re buying for parents or in-laws, this is a good option.
Features include coverage for pre-existing conditions (after waiting period), annual health check-ups, and no upper age limit.
Many NRIs in our community buy Care Supreme for themselves and Care Supreme Senior for their parents. A practical combination.
Care Advantage
A newer plan with higher sum insured options and comprehensive features. Worth comparing with Care Supreme if you want coverage above Rs 1 crore.
Care Freedom
A budget-friendly plan for those who need basic coverage at a lower premium. Not ideal as a primary plan, but could work as a stopgap while you figure out your long-term health insurance strategy.
The Waiting Period Reality
Standard waiting periods for Care Supreme:
| Waiting Period Type | Duration |
|---|---|
| Initial waiting period (non-accidental claims) | 30 days |
| Waiting Period Type | Duration |
|---|---|
| Specific diseases/procedures | 24 months |
| Waiting Period Type | Duration |
|---|---|
| Pre-existing diseases | 36 months (reducible with Instant Cover) |
Accidents are covered from day one.
If You’ve Already Returned – Here’s the Math
Let’s say you moved back to India 6 months ago and you buy Care Supreme today.
Without the Instant Cover add-on, your pre-existing conditions won’t be covered for another 36 months from today. That’s 3 years from now.
With the Instant Cover add-on, that waiting period shrinks significantly. Pay the extra premium. It’s worth it.
But here’s the key insight I share in every community call: even if you’re in the waiting period, the policy still covers you for accidents from day one, and for all non-PED illnesses after 30 days. You’re not completely uncovered.
If you’d bought the policy a year before returning – as I always recommend in our return planning guide – you’d already have 12 months of waiting period behind you. But no point looking back. Buy today.
How Your NRI/Returned Status Affects Things
Here’s where Care Health has some specific advantages for returned NRIs.
Can NRIs buy Care Health Insurance?
Yes. Care Health has a dedicated NRI health insurance page on their website.
The 15% NRI Discount
Care Health offers a 15% discount on premiums for NRIs. To qualify:
- You need to be insured under the policy yourself (can’t just insure parents to get the discount)
- You need to provide proof of NRI status (employment documents abroad, passport stamps etc.)
This is significantly more generous than ICICI Lombard’s NRI discount. HDFC Ergo and Niva Bupa don’t offer a specific NRI premium discount.
What about the 0% GST change?
Since September 2025, GST on individual health insurance premiums has been reduced to 0%. This applies to everyone, not just NRIs. But it means the earlier NRI-specific GST refund benefit is no longer relevant since there’s no GST to refund. The 15% premium discount still applies though.
What documents do you need?
Indian passport, PAN card, address proof, and an Indian bank account. If you’ve already returned, you’ll have most of these. If you still hold OCI status, check with Care Health on specific documentation requirements.
Premium payment
From your Indian bank account. If you still have an NRE or NRO account, that works. If you’ve already converted to a resident account, even simpler.
What about your residential status transition?
If you’ve recently returned and your residential status is changing from NRI to Resident or RNOR, inform Care Health. Your policy continues without disruption. All benefits carry over.
Tax benefits?
Yes. Under Section 80D, you can claim deductions for health insurance premiums. If you’re filing ITR in India (which you should be, once you’re back), this helps reduce your tax burden.
The Claim Process
Care Health processes claims in-house (no TPA). They target cashless claim settlement within 1 hour and reimbursement within 5-7 days.
Cashless Claims
- For planned hospitalization, inform Care Health at least 48 hours before
- For emergencies, inform within 24 hours
- Visit a network hospital with your Care Health member ID
- Submit the pre-authorization form at the hospital’s insurance desk
- Care Health reviews and approves
- Get treated – insurer settles directly with hospital
- Pay only for non-covered items at discharge
Reimbursement Claims
- Get treated at any hospital
- Pay all bills upfront
- Collect every document – bills, prescriptions, discharge card, test reports
- Submit claim form and documents within 15 days of discharge (online or offline)
- Care Health processes the claim after verification
What Our Community Says About Claims
I’ll be transparent. Care Health’s claim experience gets mixed reviews in our group.
The majority of members have had smooth cashless experiences. Several have specifically praised how the Claim Shield add-on covered consumable items that other insurers deducted.
But a few members have reported inconsistent customer service response times. And reimbursement claims can occasionally take longer than the advertised 5-7 days during peak periods.
My advice: always go cashless when possible. Keep original documents. And follow up proactively if your reimbursement is delayed.
What Care Health Does NOT Cover
Standard exclusions:
- Cosmetic and aesthetic treatments (unless post-accident)
- Treatment for alcohol or drug abuse
- Self-inflicted injuries
- Congenital external diseases
- Infertility treatments
- Dental procedures (unless accident-related)
- Experimental/unproven treatments
- War, nuclear incidents
- Vaccination costs (except post-animal bite)
- Obesity treatment (unless medically necessary)
- External durable medical equipment (unless accident-related)
How Much Does It Cost?
Care Supreme is consistently more affordable than comparable plans from HDFC Ergo and Niva Bupa. Here’s a rough ballpark:
| Profile | Approximate Annual Premium |
|---|---|
| 30-year-old individual (Rs 10 lakh SI) | Rs 6,000 – Rs 9,000 |
| Profile | Approximate Annual Premium |
|---|---|
| 35-year-old couple + 1 child (Rs 15 lakh SI) | Rs 14,000 – Rs 24,000 |
| Profile | Approximate Annual Premium |
|---|---|
| 45-year-old individual (Rs 20 lakh SI) | Rs 12,000 – Rs 20,000 |
These are indicative. Actual premiums depend on your age, city zone, and add-ons. Get exact quotes from careinsurance.com.
With the 15% NRI discount, these numbers drop further.
Ways to save on premiums:
- 15% NRI discount – the biggest single discount in this series
- Multi-year policies – buy for 2-3 years for a discount
- Wellness benefit – meet wellness goals set by Care Health for renewal discounts
- Digital discount – 5% discount for buying online
- Voluntary co-payment – accept a co-pay for lower premiums
Four-Way Comparison: Where Does Care Health Stand?
| Feature | Care Supreme | HDFC Ergo Optima Secure | Niva Bupa ReAssure 3.0 | ICICI Lombard Elevate |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| CSR (FY25) | 96.74% | 97.45% | 92.4% | ~85% |
| Feature | Care Supreme | HDFC Ergo Optima Secure |
|---|---|---|
| Network Hospitals | 22,100+ | 13,000+ |
| Feature | Care Supreme | Niva Bupa ReAssure 3.0 |
|---|---|---|
| NRI Discount | 15% | None |
| Feature | Care Supreme | ICICI Lombard Elevate |
|---|---|---|
| Room Rent Cap | None | Varies by plan |
| Feature | Care Supreme | HDFC Ergo Optima Secure |
|---|---|---|
| Pricing | More affordable | Premium pricing |
My take: Care Health offers the best value-for-money in this series. It’s not the flashiest. It doesn’t have Lock the Clock or Cashless Everywhere.
But it delivers solid, comprehensive coverage at a lower price point with the largest hospital network among all four insurers I’ve reviewed.
For NRIs who’ve already returned and need to get covered quickly without blowing their budget, Care Supreme is hard to beat.
What Nobody Tells You
Complaint volumes are higher than top-tier insurers.
Care Health averages around 42-47 complaints per 10,000 claims. That’s similar to Niva Bupa but higher than HDFC Ergo (~15) and ICICI Lombard (~11). This doesn’t mean claims are rejected. It means the process isn’t always smooth.
The “Religare” name still shows up.
On some hospital systems, in some documents, you’ll still see “Religare” instead of “Care Health.” Don’t panic. It’s the same company.
Just the old branding taking time to update everywhere.
Annual health check-ups are genuinely useful.
Most plans offer this but people forget to use it. Care Supreme gives you annual health check-ups from day one. Use them.
Especially after moving back when you’re adjusting to a different climate, different water, different stress levels.
I’ve seen NRIs in our community discover health issues they didn’t know about during these check-ups.
The Cumulative Bonus Super rider is underrated.
The base cumulative bonus (100%) is standard. But the rider that extends it to 600% or unlimited is incredibly powerful over a 10-15 year horizon.
If you’re in your 30s or 40s and plan to hold this policy long-term, this rider is worth the extra cost.
No upper age limit is a quiet game-changer.
If your parents are above 70 or 75, many insurers won’t issue a new policy. Care Health will. This alone makes it the go-to recommendation for elderly parents in our community.
Pre-policy medical check-ups.
Required for applicants above 45 or those with pre-existing conditions. Since you’re already in India, this is straightforward.
Schedule it at a Care Health network hospital.
Your Checklist: Already Returned and Need Insurance Now
If you’ve been in India for a few weeks or months and still don’t have health insurance, here’s your action plan:
- Calculate how much sum insured you need (minimum Rs 10-15 lakh for metro cities)
- List all pre-existing conditions – be honest and complete
- Visit careinsurance.com and get a quote for Care Supreme
- Add the Instant Cover add-on if you have PEDs and need faster coverage
- Add Claim Shield for consumable coverage
- Consider the Cumulative Bonus Super rider if you’re planning long-term
- Check for network hospitals near your home and workplace
- Apply the 15% NRI discount if you still qualify (recently returned NRIs usually do)
- Pay via your Indian bank account
- Inform Care Health about your residential status (NRI, RNOR, or Resident)
- Download the Care Health app for claims and policy management
- Schedule your free annual health check-up
Don’t wait another month. Seriously.
Common Questions (FAQ)
Q: I moved back to India 8 months ago and have no health insurance. Is it too late?
Absolutely not. But every month you wait is a month of waiting period you lose. Buy today. Your PED waiting period clock starts ticking from the day you buy, not the day you returned.
Q: Can I still get the NRI discount if I’ve already returned?
In most cases, yes – especially if your return was recent. You’ll need proof of your NRI status (overseas employment documents, passport stamps). Check with Care Health for current eligibility criteria.
Q: How does Care Health compare to HDFC Ergo for a family of four?
Care Health is typically more affordable for similar coverage. HDFC Ergo has a slightly higher CSR and the 4X Secure Benefit. Care Health has a larger network and cheaper premiums. Both are excellent. If budget is a constraint, Care Health wins. If you want the highest claim reliability, HDFC Ergo edges ahead.
Q: Is Care Supreme good for parents above 60?
Care Supreme itself has no upper age limit. But Care Supreme Senior is specifically designed for senior citizens with features tailored for elderly healthcare needs. For parents, I’d compare both options.
Q: Does Care Health cover AYUSH treatments?
Yes. Ayurveda, Yoga, Unani, Siddha, and Homeopathy treatments are fully covered under Care Supreme.
Q: Can I port from another insurer to Care Health?
Yes. IRDAI allows portability. Your waiting period credits carry over. Apply at least 45 days before your current policy’s renewal date.
Q: What’s the difference between Care Supreme and Care Advantage?
Care Advantage is a newer plan with higher coverage options and some additional features. Care Supreme is more established and has a longer track record. Compare both on the Care Health website based on your specific needs.
Q: Does Care Health offer maternity coverage?
Yes, but only as an add-on to the main policy, not in the base plan. There’s a waiting period for maternity benefits. If you’re planning a family after returning, factor this in.
My Honest Take
Care Health Insurance is the best value-for-money option in this review series.
It won’t wow you with flashy features like Niva Bupa’s Lock the Clock or ICICI Lombard’s Cashless Everywhere.
But it delivers where it counts: comprehensive coverage, the largest hospital network, competitive pricing, and a steadily improving claim settlement ratio.
For NRIs who’ve already returned to India and need to get insured quickly, Care Supreme with the Instant Cover and Claim Shield add-ons is my go-to recommendation in our community.
The 15% NRI discount is icing on the cake. The no upper age limit makes it perfect for covering parents.
And the affordable pricing means you can get a meaningful sum insured without stretching your financial plan.
Is it perfect? No. Customer service can be inconsistent. Complaint volumes are higher than I’d like. And some of the more innovative features (like premium locking or day-1 PED for 145 conditions) are available from Niva Bupa but not here.
But for the majority of returning NRIs – especially those on a budget, those with elderly parents to cover, or those who just need solid, reliable coverage without overthinking it – Care Supreme is an excellent choice.
Don’t wait for the “right time” to buy. The right time was before you moved. The second-best time is today.
In the next article in this health insurance series, I’ll be reviewing Star Health – India’s largest standalone health insurer. Stay tuned.
