I get this question at least once a week in our WhatsApp groups.
“Mani, I can’t find my PAN card. I need it for a property sale next month. What do I do?”
The panic is understandable.
PAN is one of those documents you need for almost everything in India – bank accounts, property transactions, filing ITR, mutual fund investments, even large cash deposits.
But here’s the good news. Replacing a lost or damaged PAN card is one of the easier things to get done.
You don’t even need to be in India.
The process is fully digital now. You can get an e-PAN (digital version) within minutes.
Or order a physical replacement card from anywhere in the world.
Let me walk you through every option.
First Things First: Don’t Panic
Your PAN number doesn’t change. Ever.
Losing the physical card doesn’t mean you’ve lost your PAN. The 10-digit alphanumeric number assigned to you stays the same for life.
What you need is a replacement card (called a “reprint”) or a digital copy (called an “e-PAN”).
Both are legally valid.
And no – you do NOT need to file a police complaint or FIR for a lost PAN card. Unlike a passport, there’s no such requirement.
Quick Decision: e-PAN or Physical Card?
Before you start, decide what you actually need.
| Option | What You Get | Time | Cost | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| e-PAN (digital PDF) | Digitally signed PDF with QR code | Minutes to a few days | Free to ₹66 | Most situations – KYC, ITR filing, banking |
| Physical PAN card | Laminated card by post | 15-20 working days | ₹50 (India) / ₹959 (abroad) | If a physical card is specifically required |
My recommendation: For most NRIs, the e-PAN is more than enough. It’s legally valid, accepted everywhere, and you can get it sitting in your living room in New Jersey or Dubai.
The physical card is nice to have. But honestly, I’ve used the e-PAN for years without issues.
Option 1: Download e-PAN for Free (Fastest Method)
This is the quickest way.
If your PAN is linked to Aadhaar, you can download your e-PAN from the Income Tax e-Filing portal in under 5 minutes.
Cost: Free
Requirement: PAN must be linked to Aadhaar. Your Aadhaar-registered mobile number must be active (to receive OTP).
Step-by-Step Process
Step 1: Go to the Income Tax e-Filing portal: incometax.gov.in
Step 2: On the homepage, look for “Instant e-PAN” under Quick Links.
Step 3: Click “Check Status / Download PAN.”
Step 4: Enter your 12-digit Aadhaar number. Click “Continue.”
Step 5: Enter the OTP sent to your Aadhaar-registered mobile number.
Step 6: Click “Download e-PAN.”
That’s it. You’ll get a PDF file.
The PDF password is your date of birth in DDMMYYYY format. So if you were born on March 15, 1985, your password is 15031985.
NRI Challenge With This Method
The OTP goes to your Aadhaar-registered mobile number. If that’s an Indian number you no longer use, this method won’t work.
Many NRIs face exactly this problem. You moved abroad, your Indian SIM expired, and now you can’t receive the OTP.
Solutions:
- If you have a family member in India, get them to reactivate your Indian SIM or get a new SIM on the same number
- Update your mobile number in Aadhaar (this requires visiting an Aadhaar center in India or using the mAadhaar app if your biometrics are registered)
- If this method doesn’t work, use Option 2 or 3 below
If you’re planning a trip to India, updating your Aadhaar details should be on your to-do list.
Option 2: Reprint PAN Card via Protean (NSDL) – Online
If you need a physical card or can’t use the free e-PAN method, apply for a “reprint” through the Protean (formerly NSDL) portal.
Important: “Reprint” means your details stay the same.
If you need to change your name, photo, address, or any other detail, that’s a “correction” – different process (covered later in this guide).
Fees
| Delivery | Cost (inclusive of taxes) |
|---|---|
| Physical PAN card to Indian address | ₹50 |
| Physical PAN card to address outside India | ₹959 |
| e-PAN only (no physical card) | ₹50 |
Step-by-Step Process
Step 1: Go to the Protean (NSDL) PAN reprint page: onlineservices.nsdl.com/paam/ReprintEPan.html
Step 2: Select “Reprint of PAN Card.”
Step 3: Enter your:
- PAN number
- Aadhaar number
- Date of birth (month and year)
- GSTN (optional – skip if not applicable)
Step 4: Tick the declaration checkbox. Enter the captcha code. Click “Submit.”
Step 5: You’ll be redirected to the payment page. Pay using credit/debit card or net banking.
Step 6: After payment, you’ll receive a 15-digit acknowledgment number. Save this.
Step 7: The physical PAN card will be dispatched to the address already in your PAN records via Speed Post.
Timeline: 15-20 working days for delivery within India. International delivery takes longer – typically 4-6 weeks.
NRI Tip
The card gets sent to the address on your PAN record. If that’s your old Indian address and you now live abroad, it’ll go there – not to your current address.
If you want it delivered to your address abroad (at ₹959), make sure your communication address is updated in the PAN database.
Otherwise, have it sent to a family member’s address in India.
Option 3: Reprint PAN Card via UTIITSL – Online
UTIITSL is the other authorized PAN service provider. The process is similar.
Fees
| Delivery | Cost (inclusive of taxes) |
|---|---|
| Physical PAN + e-PAN to Indian address | ₹107 |
| Physical PAN + e-PAN to address outside India | ₹1,017 |
| e-PAN only (no physical card) | ₹72 |
UTIITSL is slightly more expensive than Protean. But some people find their interface easier to navigate.
Step-by-Step Process
Step 1: Go to the UTIITSL PAN portal: pan.utiitsl.com
Step 2: Click on the “Reprint” option.
Step 3: Enter your PAN number and other required details.
Step 4: Verify via OTP.
Step 5: Make payment online.
Step 6: Track using the acknowledgment number.
Timeline: Same as Protean – 15-20 working days within India.
Which One Should You Use – Protean or UTIITSL?
Use the one that originally issued your PAN card.
You can usually tell by checking your existing PAN card or any old correspondence.
That said, either portal works for reprints regardless of original issuer. But using the original issuer tends to be smoother.
Option 4: Apply Offline (When Visiting India)
If you’re visiting India and prefer the in-person route, you can apply at a PAN facilitation center.
Step-by-Step Process
Step 1: Download Form 49A from the Protean or UTIITSL website.
Step 2: Fill out the form. In the “type of application” field, select “Reprint of PAN Card.”
Step 3: Attach two passport-sized photographs.
Step 4: Visit the nearest TIN Facilitation Center or UTIITSL PAN center. These are available in most Indian cities.
Step 5: Submit the form with photographs and pay the fee.
Step 6: Collect the acknowledgment receipt with tracking number.
Step 7: The new card will be dispatched to your registered address in 15-20 working days.
Finding a center: Search for “TIN facilitation center near me” or check the NSDL website for the complete list by city.
What If You Don’t Know Your PAN Number?
This happens more often than you’d think. You lost the card, and you don’t remember the number.
Method 1: Check Old Documents
Your PAN number appears on:
- Old ITR acknowledgments
- Form 16 from previous employers
- Bank account opening forms
- Mutual fund statements
- Insurance policies
- Form 26AS on the IT portal
Check your email. You likely have at least one of these digitally.
Method 2: “Know Your PAN” Facility
The Income Tax Department has a facility to find your PAN number online.
Step 1: Go to the e-Filing portal: incometax.gov.in
Step 2: Look for “Know Your PAN” under services.
Step 3: Enter your name, date of birth, and mobile number.
Step 4: Complete OTP verification.
Step 5: Your PAN will be displayed.
Method 3: Contact NSDL/UTIITSL
Email [email protected] with your:
- Full name
- Father’s name
- Date of birth
They’ll verify and share your PAN details.
Method 4: Check Your Aadhaar-PAN Link Status
If your PAN is linked to Aadhaar, you can find it through the linking verification page on the e-Filing portal.
This indirectly confirms your PAN number.
Keeping your PAN card details safely stored digitally is one of those small things that saves enormous hassle later.
What If You Need to Change Details (Not Just Reprint)?
A “reprint” gives you a new card with the same existing details.
It uses the photo and signature already in the PAN database.
If you need to update anything – name change after marriage, address update, photo update, date of birth correction – that’s a “Correction/Change in PAN Data” process.
Different from reprint.
When You Need Correction (Not Reprint)
- Name changed after marriage
- Address needs updating
- Photo is old and unrecognizable
- Date of birth is incorrect
- Father’s name needs correction
- Signature needs updating
How to Apply for Correction
Online through Protean (NSDL):
Step 1: Go to onlineservices.nsdl.com
Step 2: Select “Changes or Correction in existing PAN Data / Reprint of PAN Card.”
Step 3: Fill in Form 49A (for Indian citizens) or Form 49AA (for foreign citizens).
Step 4: Upload supporting documents (proof of identity, address, date of birth as applicable).
Step 5: Pay the fee:
- ₹107 (physical PAN + e-PAN, Indian address)
- ₹1,017 (physical PAN + e-PAN, address outside India)
Step 6: Submit. You’ll get an acknowledgment number.
Step 7: If you chose physical document submission, send the signed acknowledgment and supporting documents to the NSDL office within 15 days of online submission.
Step 8: Alternatively, you can e-Sign using Aadhaar OTP (no physical document submission needed).
Documents Needed for Correction
| Change | Documents Required |
|---|---|
| Name change | Marriage certificate, gazette notification, or court order |
| Address update | Passport, utility bill, bank statement, or Aadhaar card |
| Date of birth | Birth certificate, matriculation certificate, or passport |
| Photo/Signature | Recent photograph and signature (uploaded during online application) |
NRI-specific documents: For NRIs, a valid passport, OCI card, or overseas address proof can be used.
PAN 2.0: What’s Changing?
The government approved the PAN 2.0 Project in late 2024. Here’s what NRIs should know.
What’s PAN 2.0?
It’s a comprehensive upgrade of the PAN ecosystem. The key change is that all PAN cards will eventually have a QR code. The system will be more integrated with other government databases.
Do you need to apply for a new PAN card?
No. Your existing PAN number remains valid. PAN 2.0 is a backend system upgrade. If you apply for a reprint now, you’ll likely receive a card with the updated QR code format automatically.
Will PAN become redundant because of Aadhaar?
No. PAN and Aadhaar serve different purposes. PAN is your tax identity. Aadhaar is your resident identity. Both remain important, especially for financial transactions and investments.
NRI-Specific Issues and Solutions
Issue 1: PAN Marked as “Inoperative”
If you’re an NRI and haven’t linked your PAN with Aadhaar, your PAN may be marked as “inoperative.”
The PAN-Aadhaar linking mandate has been a source of confusion for NRIs. Here’s the current position:
- NRIs who have Aadhaar: Must link PAN with Aadhaar
- NRIs who DON’T have Aadhaar: Can inform their Jurisdictional Assessing Officer (JAO) about their NRI status with supporting documents to keep PAN active
If your PAN is inoperative, higher TDS (20%) will be deducted on your Indian income. Get it resolved before any property sale or investment transaction.
To find your JAO: Use the “Know Your AO” facility on the e-Filing portal.
Issue 2: Can’t Receive OTP on Indian Mobile
Many NRIs don’t have active Indian mobile numbers. This creates problems with OTP-based verification.
Solutions:
- Get an Indian SIM with international roaming (Airtel and Jio both offer this)
- Ask a trusted family member to help receive OTP (if comfortable sharing)
- Visit India and update your mobile number in Aadhaar and PAN records
- Use the offline/physical application method instead
Issue 3: PAN Card Delivery to Foreign Address
Both Protean and UTIITSL can dispatch PAN cards to international addresses. The cost is higher (₹959 via Protean, ₹1,017 via UTIITSL), and delivery takes 4-6 weeks.
The card is sent via international Speed Post. Tracking is available, but it’s not always reliable for international shipments.
Community tip: Many NRIs get the card delivered to their Indian family address and have a family member courier it abroad. This is faster and more reliable in practice.
Issue 4: Multiple PANs
Some NRIs accidentally end up with two PAN numbers – maybe they applied for a new PAN instead of a reprint, or got one through a different employer.
This is illegal. Holding multiple PANs can attract a penalty of ₹10,000 under Section 272B(1).
If you have multiple PANs, surrender the extra one(s) immediately by filing a PAN change request and indicating which PAN you want to retain.
Issue 5: Name Mismatch Between PAN and Passport
After marriage or if your name was spelled differently on your original PAN, there may be a mismatch with your passport or OCI card.
This causes problems with property registration, bank KYC, and ITR filing.
Solution: Apply for a PAN correction (not reprint) with your current name and supporting documents. Get the PAN name to match your passport exactly.
Fees Summary
Here’s a complete breakdown of all PAN card fees:
| Service | Protean (NSDL) | UTIITSL |
|---|---|---|
| Reprint – Physical card (India delivery) | ₹50 | ₹107 |
| Reprint – Physical card (international delivery) | ₹959 | ₹1,017 |
| Reprint – e-PAN only | ₹50 | ₹72 |
| Correction – Physical card (India delivery) | ₹107 | ₹107 |
| Correction – Physical card (international delivery) | ₹1,017 | ₹1,017 |
| e-PAN from IT e-Filing portal (Aadhaar-based) | Free | N/A |
| e-PAN download (within 30 days of PAN allotment) | Free (3 times) | Free |
| e-PAN download (after 30 days) | ~₹8.26 | Similar |
Payment methods: Credit card, debit card, net banking, or demand draft. Card payments may attract an additional 2% bank charge.
NRIs can pay using international credit/debit cards. Demand drafts should be in favor of “NSDL-PAN” payable in Mumbai.
Step-by-Step Checklist: What to Do Right Now
If your PAN card is lost or damaged, follow this:
Step 1: Don’t panic. Your PAN number is permanent.
Step 2: Find your PAN number (check old ITRs, Form 16, bank records, or use the “Know Your PAN” facility).
Step 3: Decide: Do you need just a digital copy (e-PAN) or a physical card?
Step 4: If e-PAN is enough, try the free download from incometax.gov.in using Aadhaar.
Step 5: If you need a physical card, apply for a reprint through Protean or UTIITSL.
Step 6: If your details need updating (name, address, photo), apply for a correction instead of reprint.
Step 7: Save your acknowledgment number and track the application.
Step 8: Once received, store a digital copy securely (email it to yourself, save in cloud storage).
Step 9: Verify that PAN-Aadhaar linking is active. If not, link them.
Quick FAQ
Q: Do I need to file a police FIR for a lost PAN card?
No. Unlike a passport, there’s no requirement to file a police complaint for a lost PAN card. Just apply for a reprint directly.
Q: Can I apply for a PAN reprint from abroad?
Yes. The entire process is online. You can apply from anywhere in the world through the Protean or UTIITSL websites.
Q: How long does it take to get a replacement PAN card?
Physical card delivery within India takes 15-20 working days. International delivery takes 4-6 weeks. e-PAN download is instant to a few days.
Q: Is the e-PAN legally valid?
Yes. The e-PAN is digitally signed by the Income Tax Department and contains a QR code. It is legally valid for all purposes including bank KYC, property registration, and ITR filing.
Q: What’s the password for the e-PAN PDF?
Your date of birth in DDMMYYYY format. Example: If born on August 10, 1980, the password is 10081980.
Q: Can I get a PAN card if I’m an OCI holder?
Yes. OCI holders can apply for PAN using Form 49AA (for foreign citizens). PAN is mandatory for OCI holders who have taxable income in India or want to invest in Indian financial markets.
Q: My PAN card photo is from 20 years ago. Can I update it?
Yes, but this requires a “Correction” application, not a “Reprint.” The reprint uses whatever photo is already in the database. For a new photo, apply for correction through Protean or UTIITSL.
Q: I applied for a new PAN instead of reprint. Now I have two PANs. What do I do?
Surrender the duplicate PAN immediately. Having multiple PANs is illegal and can attract a ₹10,000 penalty. Apply for correction/cancellation of the extra PAN.
Q: Can someone else apply on my behalf?
Yes. A representative can apply on behalf of the PAN holder by submitting proper authorization documents.
Q: My PAN is inoperative because I didn’t link it to Aadhaar. How do I fix this?
If you have Aadhaar, link it immediately through the e-Filing portal (you’ll need to pay a ₹1,000 late fee). If you don’t have Aadhaar, contact your Jurisdictional Assessing Officer with proof of NRI status.
Q: I’m returning to India soon. Should I update my PAN address before or after I move?
After you move. Update your PAN address to your new Indian address once you’re settled. This helps with bank account conversions and other post-return formalities.
